Cea de-a 37-a ediție a celui mai important eveniment al anului pentru sectorul de tehnologii trenchless, NO-DIG International, organizat anul acesta la Florența a fost un prilej perfect pentru a realiza un interviu în exlusivitate cu Samuel T. Ariaratnam, Ph.D., P.E., P.Eng., F.ASCE, F.CAE, NAC – Professor & Construction Engineering Chair, Arizona State University.

Trenchless Romania: Aveți o experiență bogată în industria trenchless. Când ați început activitatea în acest domeniu?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Am început să activez în industria de tehnologii trenchless în 1996, în timp ce eram Asistent Universitar la Universtatea din Alberta, Canada. Făceam parte dintr-un grup local de profesioniști din Edmonton, Alberta care lucrau să creeze u nouă filială regională pentru Asociația de Trenchless din America de Nord (NASTT). În această perioadă eram angajat și într-un amplu proiect de cercetare în domeniul forajului orizontal dirijat, astfel că așa a început călătoria mea în sectorul trenchless.

Trenchless Romania: În calitate de fost președinte ISTT cum vedeți expansiunea tehnologiilor trenchless la nivel global?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Sunt încântat de dezvoltarea pe care o au tehnologiilor trenchless. In calitate de președinte ISTT în perioada 2010-2013, am avut ocazia să călătoresc în foarte multe regiuni și să constant nemijlocit interesul pentru aceste tehnologii. Chiar si azi călătoresc foarte mult și pot observa cu ușurință cum sectorul de tehnologii de foraj orizontal este în continuă creștere.

Trenchless Romania: Care sunt cele mai dezvoltate regiuni din punct de vedere al utilizării tehnologiilor trenchless?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Cele mai dezvoltate regiuni sunt: Europa de Vest, America de Nord, Australia si China. De asemenea, observ o creștere și în India, America de Sud si sudul Asiei (Thailanda, Filipine, Indonezia, Japonia).

Trenchless Romania: Dintre țările europene care este cea mai receptivă la aplicarea acestor tehnologii?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Germania continuă să fie un lider european în dezvoltarea tehnologiilor și soluțiilor trenchless; cu toate acestea și alte țări precum UK sau Finlanda au început să se dezvolte din ce în ce mai mult în această direcție.

Trenchless Romania: Cum vedeți situația din România? Observați unele îmbunătățiri pentru piața de foraje orizontale din România?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Piața de trenchless din România este destul de mică comparativ cu celelalte țări europene. Cu siguranță există oportunități multiple pentru utilizarea tehnologiilor no-dig, mai ales în București. Cheia succesului este educația și demonstrarea beneficiilor utilizării unor astfel de metode.

Trenchless Romania: După cum știți deja, organizăm evenimentul de trenchless din România – Trenchless Romania Conference & Exhibition. Cum vedeți evoluția acestui proiect?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Cred că este minunat! Cu cât se face mai multă educație despre trenchless, cu atât este mai bine pentru promovarea beneficiilor acestei tehnologii. Am auzit lucruri extrem de frumoase despre evenimentul Trenchless Romania Conference & Exhibition și sper să reușesc să particip în viitorul apropiat.

Trenchless Romania: Am participat anul acesta la NO-DIG Florența, cel mai imporant eveniment al anului pentru industria de trenchless. Cum vi s-a părut această ediție?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: No-Dig Florența a fost un eveniment de succes. Asociația Italiană pentru tehnologii trenchless (IATT) a făcut o treabă extraordinară în organizarea și promovarea evenimentului. Programului sesiunilor tehnice a fost cel mai lung din ultimii ani, cu peste 100 de prezentări. Zona de expoziție a fost extrem de complexă, cu companii din toate regiunile lumii dornice să își prezinte cele mai noi produse și tehnologii. Mai mult decât atât, IATT a organizat cu succes și sesiuni de networking și relaxare pentru toți participanții.

Trenchless Romania: Felicitări pentru distincția oferită de către ISTT pentru recunoașterea întregii dumneavoastră activități. Cum vă simțiți în posesia unei medalii de aur?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Sunt onorat să primesc această medalie de aur, cu atât mai mult cu cât sunt cea de-a șaptea persoană care primește o astfel de recunoaștere în cei 33 de ani de existență a ISTT. Este cu adevărat un premiu pe care îl voi prețui pentru totdeauna, sunt un campion al industriei trenchless și voi continua să fiu un ambasador de succes.

Trenchless Romania: You have a complex activity in the trenchless industry. When and how did it all start?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: I first got involved in the trenchless industry back in 1996, while I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta in Canada. I was part of a group of local professionals in Edmonton, Alberta who worked to create a new Regional Chapter of the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT). During this time, I was also engaged in research related to horizontal directional drilling and thus began my journey in the trenchless field.

Trenchless Romania: As past chairman of ISTT how do you see the expansion of trenchless technologies around the world?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: I am encouraged by the growth of trenchless technologies on a global scale. As Chairman of ISTT between 2010 and 2013, I had the opportunity to travel to many countries in all corners of the globe to witness first-hand the interest and adoption of trenchless methods. Today, I continue to visit many countries and am pleased to see the interest continue to grow in trenchless.

Trenchless Romania: What are the most developed regions ?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Western Europe, North America, Australia, and China are the most developed regions in trenchless; however, there has been growth in India, South America, and Southeast Asia (i.e. Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Japan)

Trenchless Romania: What is the position of European countries in this market?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: European countries have an aging underground pipeline network and thus are more focused on rehabilitation technologies. Trenchless will continue to be strong in Europe due to compact and congested urban cities and preference for environmentally-friendly construction methods.

Trenchless Romania: Among the European countries which one is the most responsive to this type of technology?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Germany continues to be a European leader in the development of trenchless technology solutions; however, other countries such as the U.K. and Finland have also developed new technologies that are being implemented.

Trenchless Romania: International and European regulations force the use of trenchless technologies. How do you appreciate the improvements?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: Personally, I am not a supporter of forced government regulations; however, the economic, social and environmental benefits of trenchless technologies are well-known and are the main drivers for the adoption of trenchless.

Trenchless Romania: How do you find the situation for Romania; do you see any improvements for the Romanian market?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: The Romanian market is quite small compared to other European countries. Regardless, there are certainly opportunities for adopting trenchless technologies, particularly in Bucharest. The key is education and continuing to show local governments the benefits compared to traditional open cut.

Trenchless Romania: As you already now we organise the event Trenchless Romania Conference & Exhibition. How do you find this project?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: I think that this is wonderful! The more education on trenchless, the better it is for promoting its benefits. I have heard wonderful things about the Trenchless Romania Conference & Exhibition and hope to attend one day in the near future.

Trenchless Romania: We participated this year to NO-DIG Florence, the most important event for the trenchless industry of the year. How did you find this edition?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: No-Dig Florence was a wonderful event and highly successful. The Italian Association for Trenchless Technology (IATT) did an excellent job in organizing and promoting the Show. The technical program was the largest in recent years with close to 100 presentations. The exhibition area was informative with companies from around the world showcasing the latest trenchless innovations. IATT also organized an excellent social programme.

Trenchless Romania: Trenchless Romania team participated this year to NO-DIG Florence, where you were awarded the ISTT Gold Medal. Congratulations! What can you say about this award?

Samuel T. Ariaratnam: I am honored to be only the seventh person in the 33 year history of ISTT to have received the ISTT Gold Medal. This is truly an honor and an award that I will always cherish. I am a champion of the trenchless industry and will continue to serve as an ambassador.
